What the neuroscience does not prove
Here is where most conference talks quietly overreach, and where a skeptical executive is right to push back. The oxytocin research shows an association between certain conditions and certain measured outcomes. It does not show that a brain mechanism causes a business result. Zak’s own HBR piece is careful to frame its productivity and engagement figures as findings from surveying employees at high-trust versus low-trust companies, not as a lab-proven chain of oxytocin causing revenue. Correlation across company categories is not the same claim as a controlled trial linking one neurochemical to one outcome, and reputable researchers in this space do not claim otherwise.
Two other honest limits are worth naming. First, oxytocin’s role in social behavior is more context-dependent than the popular version of the story suggests. It is associated with bonding and cooperation, but researchers in the field have also found it can sharpen in-group favoritism, which is not the same thing as universal trustworthiness. Second, none of this research explains how to sustain trust once it exists, or how to rebuild it after it breaks. It identifies triggers.
